Question: What, if anything, should hospitals be doing now given economists’ projections of a forthcoming economic downturn?
Erickajoy Daniels: We need to reimagine ourselves [healthcare]. We need to pay more attention to disruptions, shift from sick-care to well-care, and redefine what it means to provide healthcare to people.
Q: What’s one lesson you learned early in your career that has helped you lead in healthcare?
ED: Understanding who you truly serve. When I worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, I learned that I was truly there to serve the inmates. When you understand who you are truly there to serve, then you can provide better services. Another important lesson learned early in my career was the importance of building a high-performance team in order to achieve those goals.
Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?
ED: I get inspiration and fresh ideas from my faith and my family. These two things help keep me grounded.
