Aspirus in Wisconsin May Open Medical School

Aspirus, a health system based in Wausau, Wis., is considering developing a medical school with other area health systems, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report.

The health system expects to complete a feasibility study for the school, which would award doctor of osteopathic medicine degrees, within a few months. The school is estimated to cost between $70 million-$75 million to develop.

The move is intended to increase the number of physicians in the state, as the Wisconsin Hospital Association estimates it will face a shortage of more than 2,000 physicians by 2030.

If Aspirus moves forward with its plans, the school could be opposed by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin, according to the report.
