RACs Now Allowed More Requests to High-Volume Hospitals

CMS has raised its limit on additional documentation requests recovery audit contractors can make to high-volume hospitals, according to a report by Ernie de los Santos in RAC Monitor.

Hospitals in Region A recently received a letter from its RAC stating that their cap was raised to 500 records per 45-day period, well above the set cap of 300 records. The letter said CMS determined that facilities with DRG payments in excess of $100 million in the latest fiscal year would be able to accommodate a larger number of requests.

However, a CMS official said the higher limit has been imposed only on a small number of facilities so far, wrote Mr. de los Santos, who is chief information officer for eduTrax.
