Here are six things to know about the conference.
1. The conference focused on improving quality of care and patient safety in emergency medicine.
2. John Nance, healthcare and aviation safety and quality expert, led the conference’s keynote address. He spoke about improving the quality of patient care through bridging cultural and communication gaps between physicians, nurses and staff.
3. Ali Farzad, MD, received the John Marx Quality Award for high quality of work, exemplary service and pursuit of excellence in emergency medicine.
4. Seamus Lonergan, MD, received the Dighton Packard Leadership Award for inspirational and effective leadership in making an extraordinary difference in emergency medicine.
5. Diane Taylor received the APP Service Award for exceptional work ethic, undaunted devotion, team spirit and outstanding patient care in emergency medicine.
6. Awards were also given to IES providers participating in a quality poster contest for original research on critical quality-of-care issues. John Garrett, MD, Dr. Farzad, Dr. Lonergan and Robert Risch, MD, took first place for their evaluation of the ADP and HEART protocol that reduced unnecessary hospital admissions for chest pain by 10 percent in nine North Texas hospitals.
