Here are four things to know.
1. AARP and its allies claim a repeal of the law would increase premiums for individuals in their 50s and 60s by $2,000 to $3,000 annually or more, the report states. This is because a Republican proposal could potentially increase the amount insurers may charge older Americans compared to young adults who are seeking the same coverage, the report states. Currently, that ratio cannot exceed three to one. However, Republicans have proposed allowing states to increase the ratio to five to one or higher, according to the report.
2. In a letter cited by the NYT, the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations said this Republican proposal would “increase the financial burden of older Americans, making coverage significantly less affordable.”
3. Republicans have also proposed allowing people to obtain subsidies outside the public marketplace, according to the report. Currently, these subsidies, which help pay for health insurance, are only available to people who buy coverage through the exchanges, the NYT notes.
4. Republicans contend their proposal would encourage competition among insurers and thus reduce prices, the NYT reports.
