St. Vincent has served the area since 1879, when a group of nuns hailing from Kansas founded the 25-bed hospital to provide healthcare in the mining town, according to the report.
The hospital’s surgery department will close this week and about one dozen elderly patients have already been relocated to nursing facilities, according to the report. The hospital’s remaining services will be phased out over the next few months, including its physical therapy and general practice clinics, which are expected to close in January 2015.
