11 Recent Hospital Layoffs

The following hospital and/or health system layoffs were announced within the past month. They are ranked by the number of employees affected.  

1. Arlington, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare laid off 104 employees due to its $13.2 million operational loss in 2011. The cuts make up about 3 percent of the system's workforce, and most layoffs occurred at the system's Northwest Community Hospital.

2. Hutchinson (Kan.) Regional Medical Center laid off 55 employees in an effort to reduce expenses. Eleven part-time and 44 full-time employees were laid off. The hospital did not specify which departments were affected.

3. North Stonington (Conn.) Health Center laid off 52 employees in addition to the closures of its urgent care, laboratory and radiology services. It is preparing for a possible closure of the entire center by April 17.

4. Leaders from Elkhart (Ind.) General Hospital announced plans to eliminate approximately 40 positions after the organization missed its 2011 budget expectations. Vacant positions will be eliminated and some employees will be laid off in a plan expected to be carried out in the next few months. The hospital has more than 2,000 employees.

5. Wyoming County Community Health System in Warsaw, N.Y., laid off 31 employees, citing a reduction in state reimbursement as the leading cause of the cutbacks. The layoffs affected 23 current employees; eight open positions will not be filled.

6. Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport, Calif., notified its 300 employees of an immediate 10 percent workforce reduction, suggesting a layoff of roughly 30 employees. The reduction is expected to occur across all areas of the hospital.

7. The 78-bed Sharon (Conn.) Hospital laid off 26 employees due to financial problems. The layoffs affected senior and middle management as well as staff positions.

8. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston announced plans to eliminate roughly 15 jobs due to a drop in patient volume for certain services. The cuts affect hospital nurses and some support staff. Beth Israel Deaconess has roughly 9,000 employees.

9. St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga., is eliminating 10 management positions and restructuring three other staff jobs. The hospital did not specify which departments were affected by the cuts. St. Francis has roughly 2,000 full- and part-time employees.

10. Cooper Green Mercy Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., is considering layoffs from three departments to save up to $6 million. Layoffs are slated to occur in the hospital's nursery, pharmacy and nursing administration departments. Roughly 12 physician contracts could also be eliminated to save $1 million of the total $6 million.

11. In March, Swedish Medical Center in Seattle alerted employees that it's losing $250,000 a day and that system workforce reductions are likely. Staffing is expected to be reduced to match current patient volumes, which are 8 percent lower than expected. The system has roughly 11,000 employees.
