At the 2013 Becker’s Hospital Review CEO Strategy Roundtable on Nov. 14, in Chicago, the following 12 CEOs will participate in a panel discussion about these and other issues relevant to healthcare leaders. The roundtable will be moderated by Chuck Lauer, former publisher of Modern Healthcare, author, public speaker and career coach.
Joseph Fifer. President and CEO of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (Westchester, Ill.). Mr. Fifer is president and CEO of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, before which he served as vice president of hospital finance at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mr. Fifer also served as chair of the HFMA Board of Directors in 2006-2007. An HFMA member since 1983, he also previously served as a chapter president. His industry insights have been featured in Forbes, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal and other leading publications. Mr. Fifer received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Mich.
Larry Goldberg. President and CEO of Loyola University Health System (Maywood, Ill.). Since taking over as the health system’s top executive in October 2011, Mr. Goldberg has led the successful integration of the health system with Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health. Prior to joining LUHS, Mr. Goldberg served as CEO of Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., where he led a multiyear strategic positioning initiative to build profitability. He is the founding member of the board of directors for the Joseph G. Nicholas Foundation for the Promotion of Youth Education. Mr. Goldberg received his master’s degree in health administration from Duke University in Durham, N.C.
Diana Hendel, PharmD. CEO of Long Beach (Calif.). Memorial Hospital, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach. Dr. Hendel is CEO of Long Beach Memorial, Community Hospital Long Beach and Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach, which are part of Fountain Valley, Calif.-based MemorialCare Health System, a nonprofit integrated healthcare delivery system. The three Long Beach hospitals include 6,000 employees, 1,500 physicians and 1,044 acute-care beds. They have annual revenues totaling more than $1 billion. Dr. Hendel was named CEO of the Long Beach hospitals in 2009, before which she served as COO. She has held several administrative posts within the health system, including administrator of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center-San Clemente (Calif.). She serves on many boards, including the Hospital Association of Southern California and the California Children’s Hospital Association. She has also been honored with many awards, including the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Women Making a Difference Award. Dr. Hendel holds a doctor of pharmacy degree from University of California San Francisco.
Catherine Jacobson. President and CEO of Froedtert Health (Milwaukee). Catherine Jacobson is president and CEO of Froedtert Health, a regional healthcare system comprised of three hospitals, a community-based medical group and a variety of healthcare joint ventures. In fiscal year 2012, the system logged approximately 1 million outpatient visits. Ms. Jacobson joined Froedtert Health in 2010 as executive vice president of finance and strategy, chief strategy officer and CFO. She became president in 2011 and assumed the role of CEO in 2012. Prior to joining Froedtert, she spent 22 years at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago in a variety of roles including CFO. She serves on the boards of the Wisconsin Hospital Association, United Way of Greater Milwaukee and the Blood Center of Wisconsin. Ms. Jacobson received her bachelor of science degree in accounting from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
Larry Kaiser, MD. CEO of Temple University Health System (Philadelphia.). Dr. Kaiser serves as CEO of Temple University Health System in Philadelphia, senior executive vice president for health sciences and dean of the Temple University School of Medicine. Before joining Temple, he served as president and the Alkek-Williams Chair of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. He has also served as surgeon-in-chief of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia. Dr. Kaiser’s research interests include lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and mediastinal tumors. He is the author or co-author of 13 books and 250 original papers. He previously served as a director of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Kaiser earned his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of California Los Angeles.
Phillip M. Kambic. President and CEO of Riverside Medical Center (Kankakee, Ill.). Mr. Kambic began serving as president and CEO of Riverside in January 2006, before which he held a number of leadership roles including senior vice president and COO. He serves on various professional boards including the Illinois Hospital Association, Illinois Provider Trust and Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council. Mr. Kambic is past president of the Kankakee Area YMCA. In 2006, he was named Business Person of the Year by the Bradley Bourbonnais Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Kambic received his master of business administration degree from Governors State University in University Park, Ill.
Lynn Nicholas. President and CEO of Massachusetts Hospital Association (Burlington, Mass.). Ms. Nicholas joined the Massachusetts Hospital Association as president and CEO in August 2007, before which she led the American Diabetes Association. She previously served as president and CEO of the Louisiana Hospital Association in Baton Rouge, La. She has also been inducted into the Massachusetts Women’s Forum. Due to Ms. Nicholas’ steadfast commitment to health and wellness as a leadership priority, MHA was awarded the Boston Business Journal’s inaugural Healthiest Employer Award for the small business category in 2011. She earned her master’s in health management at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
Michael Sachs. Chairman of Sg2 (Skokie, Ill.). Mr. Sachs is founder and chairman of Sg2, a healthcare analytics firm that serves over 1,200 organizations in more than 13 countries. Before founding Sg2, Mr. Sachs was the chairman of Sachs Group, which provided healthcare planning and marketing data to hospitals and health plans in the U.S. Mr. Sachs also previously served on the management team of Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich. He is a frequent lecturer on the future of healthcare and the impact of business and economic changes on the delivery of care. He is an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organization, World Presidents’ Organization, Chief Executives Organization and The Economic Club of Chicago.
José R. Sánchez. CEO of Norwegian American Hospital (Chicago). With more than 30 years of experience as a healthcare executive, Mr. Sánchez serves as president and CEO of Norwegian American Hospital. Before this role, he served as senior vice president of the Generations+/Northern Manhattan Health Network, a healthcare network in the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. He serves on the boards of the Illinois Hospital Association, Puerto Rican Arts Alliance and the City Club of Chicago. He was also named to State Health Improvement Plan Implementation Coordination Council and the Budgeting for Results Commission by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.
Quint Studer. Consultant and Founder of Studer Group (Gulf Breeze, Fla.). Mr. Studer spent 10 years as a teacher before entering the healthcare industry in 1984. Before founding the Studer Group, he held a number of positions in healthcare organizations, including serving as president of Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. Mr. Studer has written six books and his first one, “Hardwiring Excellence,” sold more than 350,000 copies. His other books include “Results that Last,” and “Straight A Leadership,” and his latest book, “The Great Employee Handbook,” which is geared towards employees at all levels.
Paul R. Summerside, MD. CMO of BayCare Clinic (Green Bay, Wis.). As CMO of BayCare Clinic, Dr. Summerside is responsible for all physician relations, recruiting, quality assurance, physician contracting, managed care contracting and narrow network contracting. He is also the chairperson of Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, Wis., a joint venture hospital of Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic. Dr. Summerside earned his medical degree at University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He has also earned a master of medical management degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Louis Shapiro. President and CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). Mr. Shapiro has served as president and CEO of the hospital since 2006, before which he served as executive vice president and clinical enterprise COO of Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System. At Geisinger, he provided senior leadership guidance to the Division of Clinical Effectiveness, which focused on quality control for the entire health system. He earned his a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health.
