1. 250 Nurses’ Aides Rally Against Cuts at Westchester Medical Center in New York
Approximately 250 nurses’ aides were laid off from Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., after the hospital hired a private company to provide aides. The laid-off aides rallied outside of the Westchester County Office Building to protest the job losses. Many said they were fired with little notification to make way for MSN, a private company that will provide nurses’ aides
2. 200 Employees Could Lose Jobs From St. Raphael, Yale-New Haven Merger
Roughly 200 employees with Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, Conn., could lose their jobs by the end of July due to a pending merger with Yale-New Haven Hospital. St. Raphael officials have estimated the loss at about 200 jobs, but a spokesperson said that figure is only an estimate. If current job vacancies are held open in anticipation of the merger, employees may be able to find other job opportunities, lowering the number of layoffs.
3. Capital Health in New Jersey to Lay Off 175 Employees
Trenton, N.J.-based Capital Health announced plans to lay off approximately 175 employees between its two hospitals in Trenton and Pennington, N.J. Capital Health includes Capital Health Regional Medical Center and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, which opened in Pennington in November 2011.
4. Lovelace Health in New Mexico Lays Off 80 Employees
Albuquerque, N.M.-based Lovelace Health System plans to lay off roughly 80 employees as part of a regular review of operations. Lovelace, owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based Ardent Health Services, includes six hospitals and 4,000 employees.
5. South Fulton Medical Center to Lay Off 80 Workers
Tenet Healthcare’s South Fulton Medical Center in East Point, Ga., announced the closure of its labor and delivery unit and eliminated 80 positions. Tenet purchased SFMC in 2001 after SFMC entered bankruptcy.
6. Unity Health System in New York Cuts 72 Positions
Rochester, N.Y.-based Unity Health System is eliminating a total of 72 management, supervisory and support positions at its Unity Hospital and three nursing homes. Thirty of those 72 positions were vacant, and four employees were moved to other positions within the health system.
7. WellStar to Cut 42 Jobs From Cobb Hospital in Georgia
Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System announced the elimination of 42 positions from its Cobb Hospital in Austell, Ga., in June. WellStar officials hoped to reassign employees to different positions. The company has a mandatory transfer and displacement policy, in which eligible staff must be offered a position within this system.
8. Calais Regional Hospital in Maine Eliminates 13 Positions, Enacts Pay Freeze
Calais (Maine) Regional Hospital eliminated 13 positions and is also implementing a freeze on salary increases.
9. Days Before Prime Healthcare Takes Charge, Saint Mary’s Announces Layoffs
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., announced a round of layoffs prior to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare’s takeover July 1. Layoff notices were distributed to an undisclosed number of the hospital’s 1,600 employees in June.
10. King’s Daughters Medical Center in Kentucky Cuts Labor Force
King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky., laid off an undisclosed number of employees in early June. A hospital spokesperson said some physicians were also laid off in addition to the across-the-board cuts.
