Here are 10 hospitals that are currently undergoing construction, including expansions and renovations.
1. The board of regents at the University of Texas approved plans to build a replacement $438 million hospital on the University of Texas Medical Branch campus. The planned Jennie Sealy Hospital will include a surgical tower, 20 operating room suites, a 54-bed intensive care unit and 250 patient rooms.
2. Expansion and renovation plans for Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, Pa., are underway. The $32 million construction plans include two new floors that feature a cardiovascular suite, two catheterization labs, eight operating rooms, a 16-bed post-anesthesia care unit and more.
3. Centra Health, based in Lynchburg, Va., started construction for a new inn designed for patients’ families. The $2.7 million inn is coming to fruition after more than 10 years of planning and will be located between Lynchburg General Hospital and Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center.
4. WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga., broke ground on a new $60 million patient tower that will feature all private patient rooms. The facility is expected to open late this year or earlier next year.
5. Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, is undergoing campus-wide renovation, including a new Magic Forest with café, Animal Friends carved from solid wood and a six-acre park.
6. Oconto (Wis.) Hospital and Medical Center will break ground for a $15 million expansion project that will increase the hospital’s size fourfold. The project, which will break ground in September, is a joint venture between Oconto Hospital Citizens’ Foundation and Green Bay, Wis.-based Bellin Health.
7. St. David’s HealthCare, based in Austin, Texas, acquired the former Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop facility, which closed in November 2010 and is scheduled to open early next year as an emergency center.
8. St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., which is part of BayCare Health System, unveiled $75 million expansion plans that feature a new 64-suite neonatal intensive care unit.
9. San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning, Calif., is progressing in the construction of its new emergency department and intensive care unit, which are part of the hospital’s larger $108 million spending plan for hospital construction.
10. Sanford Health, based in Fargo, N.D. and Sioux Falls, S.D., unveiled plans for an anticipated $360 million, 371-private room Sanford Fargo Medical Center in Fargo. Groundbreaking is expected in 2013, with anticipated completion in 2016.
