6 Practices of Top-Performing ORs

At the Becker's Hospital Review Annual Meeting in Chicago May 9, Jeff Peters, president and CEO of Surgical Directions, discussed how to create best-in-class perioperative services under accountable care and value-based purchasing.

Successful healthcare organizations follow a five-step process when developing a perioperative strategy, according to Mr. Peters:

1. Define surgical lines to focus growth
2. Define how to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage
3. Provide transparent robust information to surgeons
4. Define which surgeons are keepers and how to address outliers
5. Improve perioperative performance

Mr. Peters also shared six of many actions top-performing hospitals take to create and maintain successful operating rooms.

•    Establish a governing body to assess how the OR can improve performance
•    Establish a robust preanesthesia testing protocol
•    Require at least 75 percent block time utilization and full day blocks
•    Provide scorecards with performance measures to physicians
•    Focus on long-term outcomes in addition to process measures
•    Conduct daily huddles
