Mr. Betjemann served as a hospital executive for nearly 40 years, holding leadership positions in hospitals in Boston, Chicago and Cleveland as well as Gary. He was named Methodist president and CEO in 1980 and led the hospital system through an era of significant economic downturn for the Gary area.

Mr. Betjemann is remembered by his staff for his ability to build coalitions and see Methodist through difficult situations, a trait that became evident when the hospital system went through a painful consolidation following his retirement, according to the report.
