The employees of Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center will be the first to try the hospital’s accountable care organization, which was launched last week, according to a report from The Record.
The ACO is a collaboration between the 775-bed HUMC and QualCare, a managed care organization that provides the medical center’s health plan. In the pilot, 13,200 people insured through HUMC’s QualCare health plan will still be able to see the physicians and providers they choose. Primary care physicians in the ACO, however, will have financial incentives to supervise their patients in a more thorough and detailed way.
Physicians who participate will receive additional reimbursements for cost-saving steps, such as ordering proper screenings in a timely manner and prescribing generic prescriptions.
