Under his tenure, Baptist Hospital and Saint Thomas Hospital have both been named to Thomson Reuter’s 100 Top Hospitals List. Baptist Hospital was recognized as one of 22 hospitals nationwide for cutting energy consumption and reducing energy use by 20 percent. Saint Thomas Hospital was recognized for high performance in five specialties including heart surgery and orthopedics by U.S. News & World’s Report.
Dr. Schatzlein has 37 years of healthcare experience as a physician and administrator. Before his appointment as CEO of Saint Thomas Health, he served as CEO of Lutheran Health Network in Fort Wayne, Ind. He began serving Lutheran Health in 1994, building and leading Lutheran Health to become one of northern Indiana’s largest health systems with eight hospitals and 43,000 annual admissions. Prior to that, he practiced cardiothoracic and vascular surgery in Fort Wayne, Ind., and was part of the team that developed Lutheran Hospital’s heart transplant program. Dr. Schatzlein performed Indiana’s first heart transplant in 1985.
