Will Netflix’s parental leave move spark competition amongst Silicon Valley companies?

Netflix has announced it will now offer its employees up to a year of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child, according to a CIO Today report.

The United States does not mandate paid maternity leave, but Netflix’s new policy could cause other companies in the Silicon Valley to rethink their policies.

Most companies and organizations will not have the bandwidth and structure to offer as extensive of a policy, but limited policies will do little to attract talented IT workers in such a competitive environment, according to the report.

Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist for Glassdoor.com, commented in the article that improving benefits is a relatively inexpensive tactic to improve employee retention and morale.
