Virtual medicine to take on larger role in army medicine

The U.S. Army has a telemedicine pilot underway in U.S. Army Special Forces, according to a U.S. Army News Service report.

As battlespaces become increasingly contested, field hospitals and operating bases may not be located near a soldier in need of care, according to the report. To address this need, the U.S. Army is developing a global teleconsultation portal for remote care. The U.S. Army Special Forces pilot utilizes a tablet computer connected to satellites and otoscopes, stethoscopes and ultrasounds, among other medical equipment. A medic is then able to monitor a patient's status while remotely connecting with another healthcare provider through the teleconsultation portal, who can provide additional instruction.

The U.S. Army is developing a similar system for use by the U.S. Navy, according to the report.
