To adopt or not to adopt: 13 top reasons physicians choose or forgo EHRs

The majority of physicians, approximately 80 percent, plan to adopt or have already adopted an EHR, according to an ONC data brief reporting results of the 2013 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey Physician Workflow Survey.

The survey analyzed the top reasons for EHR adoption among early adopters (between 2009 and 2013) and those who had not yet adopted EHRs as of 2013.

Here are the top drivers for adoption among physicians who had not yet adopted EHRs in 2013.

  • Incentive payments or financial penalties — 51 percent
  • Technical assistance EHR implementation — 46 percent
  • Board certification requirement — 44 percent
  • Electronic exchange capability — 39 percent
  • Trusted colleagues using EHRs — 36 percent
  • Assistance with selecting EHR — 29 percent
  • Availability of certified EHRs — 19 percent

Here are the top reasons physicians said they did not plan to adopt an EHR as of 2013.

  • Lack of resources (financial, time, staff) — 67 percent
  • Lack of financial resources — 57 percent
  • Lack of time — 48 percent
  • Privacy and security concerns — 43 percent
  • Lack of staff — 40 percent
  • No system fits specialty — 21 percent
