Study: US wireless data usage increased 137% in 2015

Wireless data usage among Americans is on the rise, according to The Hill.

The finding comes from a survey by CTIA – The Wireless Association, a Washington, D.C.-based mobile industry trade group.

The group found America used 4.06 trillion megabytes of data in 2014 and 9.65 million in 2015, equating to an increase of 137 percent. On an average monthly basis, usage rose from 338.4 billion megabytes per month in 2014 to 804.2 billion in 2015.

Here are three other findings from CTIA's survey.

  • The number of smartphone users increased 9.7 percent between 2014 and 2015. In 2014, there were 208.1 million smartphone users, while there were 228.3 million in 2015.
  • Americans' minute usage increased 17.4 percent during the same time period, from 2.5 trillion minutes in 2014 to 2.8 trillion in 2015.
  • SMS/MMS traffic increased 1.7 percent between 2014 and 2015, from 2.07 trillion in 2014 to 2.11 trillion in 2015.

"Americans today have mobile-first lives," said CTIA President Meredith Attwell Baker in a statement. "Remarkably, the amount of traffic on mobile networks more than doubled last year and shows no signs of slowing down."
