State Farm, Amazon creating Alexa skill to check on aging relatives

State Farm and Amazon are working together to develop a new skill for the Alexa voice assistant that would allow people to keep an eye on aging family members who live alone, CNBC reports.

Seniors will be able to send alerts and check-ins to their relatives and caregivers through the Amazon Echo Show device, which will work in tandem with a State Farm-designed mobile app. The Alexa skill will also reportedly suggest a list of social activities for family members to do with their aging relatives.

For now, the skill will not go any further than offering social and emotional support to seniors and their caregivers; per CNBC, there are no plans to add medication reminders or other medical support tools. The skill is expected to launch in 2020, following trials to be conducted in the coming months.

In a statement to CNBC, a State Farm representative described the skill as creating "a virtual circle of support, coordination and communication at any time of the day while delivering a personalized experience to the senior."
