St. Mary's Medical Center faces PHI breach lawsuit

A woman is suing St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., alleging the hospital did not adequately protect her protected health information and permitted unauthorized individuals to view her records, reports West Virginia Record.

The hospital and two individuals are named as defendants in the lawsuit, according to the report.

The woman reportedly received some lab tests in October 2013, including one for sexually transmitted diseases. According to the report, the woman did not disclose the results of the lab test to anyone, but she alleges two individuals accessed and viewed her results several times in December 2013. Additionally, the woman alleges the two individuals altered her test results to indicate the woman had tested positive for two STDs, and then shared those results with "multiple third-parties," according to the report.

The woman claims there were posts on the Internet about her falsified lab results. She claims the defendants' actions were negligent and caused emotional distress. She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
