President Trump nominated Mr. Gfrerer as the assistant secretary for information and technology at the VA in July. At the time, Politico suggested Mr. Gfrerer could also take on the role of CIO.
Camilo Sandoval has been serving as the agency’s interim CIO, but congressional Democrats have called for his firing amid concerns over his involvement in the 2016 presidential election as the director of data operations for President Donald Trump’s campaign.
Mr. Gfrerer was in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years, including serving as the first director of the Marine Corps Information Operations Center. Since 2015, he has been an executive director at Ernst & Young, a professional services firm.
The VA CIO will help guide the agency’s Cerner EHR modernization project. Genevieve Morris, the officer tasked to oversee the project, abruptly quit in late August after just over one month.
