Rush University Hospital allegedly facing lawsuit over fingerprint scanning

Chicago-based Rush University Hospital is allegedly being sued by a former employee for its use of fingerprint scanning, Law360 reported Oct. 27.

The proposed class-action lawsuit, filed in Illinois state court by a former Rush respiratory therapist, alleges that the health system violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.

According to the suit, the health system required the employee to scan their fingerprints to access medicine and supply dispensing machines.

The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, which was passed in the state in 2008, requires organizations that use and store biometric identifiers to comply with certain requirements.

However, Rush told Becker's that it has not been served with a filing on this matter and cannot speak to it without review.
