Research-Backed Tech: App That Diagnoses Atrial Fibrillation and Tool to Detect Malware in Medical Devices

Recent studies have lent credence to the abilities of two recent technologies.

AliveCor Heart Monitor for iPhone correctly diagnoses atrial fibrillation 97 percent of the time, according to new research from the University of Sydney. The method is both cost-effective and helps prevent strokes by identifying previously undiagnosed patients. AliveCor has been approved by the FDA.

Researchers from several universities have created WattsUpDoc, an add-on monitoring system that detects malware on medical devices by analyzing power usage. The tool can correctly identify malware with 94 percent accuracy, according to research to be presented at the USENIX Workshop on Health Information Technologies in Washington, D.C.
