A panel of independent reviewers published a report commissioned by Google-owned DeepMind Health to study how technology is used at NHS facilities. The panel determined NHS still uses many paper-based systems. To streamline clinical care, some physicians are “manufacturing their own technical fixes” by using camera apps like Snapchat to send patient scans to their colleagues and record patient information for future use, according to the report.
“The digital revolution has largely bypassed the NHS, which, in 2017, still retains the dubious title of being the world’s largest purchaser of fax machines,” the report reads. “It is difficult to criticise these individuals, given that this makes their job possible. However, this is clearly an insecure, risky and nonauditable way of operating, and cannot continue.”
