Reimbursement models, data privacy among obstacles to digital health partnerships

Healthcare providers and pharmaceutical and life sciences companies are increasingly looking to partner with digital health developers, but struggle to find digital solutions that fit into the existing market and business models, a recent survey found.

"Digital Health: From Innovation to Solutions," from Boston-based law firm Ropes & Gray, surveyed more than 250 leaders across healthcare. Nearly half of respondents said most health tech companies lack a thorough understanding of the healthcare market, and a full 60 percent said the industry's complex business and reimbursement models pose a challenge to digital health companies looking to break through.

Beyond the challenges of the industry as a whole, digital health companies face several other obstacles as they attempt to fit into the healthcare ecosystem. Among those cited by the survey's respondents were pricing and reimbursement (26 percent), data privacy and security (19 percent) and compliance and regulatory issues (13 percent).

Still, nearly one-third of healthcare organizations surveyed said they had either partnered with or acquired a digital health company in the preceding year, while another 35 percent said they would likely have affiliation talks with companies within the next year.
