Quality improvement measurement is the top IT business objective in 2018, survey shows

Forty percent of healthcare executives and IT professionals rated measuring improvement in patient care quality as the top business objective in the coming year, according to the 6th Annual Health IT Industry Outlook Survey conducted by Stoltenberg Consulting.

The survey includes responses from 300 healthcare professionals, including healthcare executives and IT professionals. It was conducted at HIMSS18, March 5 to March 9 in Las Vegas.

Here are four survey findings:

1. Thirty-nine percent of survey respondents rated artificial intelligence as the most significant health IT industry topic in 2018, followed by cybersecurity (25 percent) and blockchain (20 percent).

2. While measuring improvement in patient care quality was rated as the top business objective for the year, 32 percent of respondents rated identifying areas of cost reduction as the second most important business objective.

3. Thirty-two percent of respondents reported clinical application/EHR implementation support as the top area where they planned to hire or outsource additional IT support.

4. Thirty-two percent of respondents said that optimizing IT/EHR performance was their most significant challenge, while 31 percent cited overcoming IT staff shortages as most challenging.

5. Around 40 percent of survey respondents reported feeling underprepared for the second year of the updated Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act rule.
