ONC creates first ever CHIO position

The ONC has named Michael McCoy, MD, the agency’s first ever chief health information officer, effective Jan. 26, according to Health Data Management.

National Coordinator Karen DeSalvo, MD, announced the appointment to staff members in an email, according to the report. “In this new role, Mike will lead development of ONC clinical policy for standards and regulatory matters to ensure ONC initiatives improve health beyond healthcare,” she wrote.

Dr. McCoy is currently CEO of Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Physician Technology Services, a consulting firm. He also is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who practiced for more than 20 years and was CMIO of Livonia, Mich.-based Catholic Health East-Trinity Health and Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Promina Gwinnet Hospital System, according to the report.
