Ohio hospitals use big data to improve patient safety

Hospitals in the Ohio Hospital Association network are using Healthcare Colloquium, a data analytics tool that aggregates data and compares it to broader trends, to improve patient outcomes.

The 219 hospitals in the Ohio Hospital Association network receive a discount on the software, which uses comparative data to track health trends in the hospitals and compare them to regional, state and national trends without having to wait years for national quality studies, according to Columbus Business First.

Healthcare Colloquium is a subsidiary of Columbus, Ohio-based Battelle, a data analytics and technology development company. The data analysis mainly focuses on improving heart failure treatment and outcomes, Battelle purchased Healthcare Colloquium in January 2014, after which Healthcare Colloquium expanded its outlook to comparative data.

Healthcare Colloquium has been testing new tools since the partnership with the Ohio Hospital Association began in June 2013, and the products are now available to the public market.

"What would take [OHA members'] local group weeks to do, they can do with the tool in a couple of clicks," Healthcare Colloquium senior vice president of member services James Stoodt told Columbus Business First.
