North Carolina university brings telemedicine to local schools

This fall, Duplin County (N.C.) Schools  will provide students with visit virtual physician visits through a partnership with Greenville, N.C.-based East Carolina University, North Carolina Health News reports.

With the help of school nurses, ECU staff will offer students remote primary care check-ups, mental health screenings and nutrition consultations. Physicians and teachers alike hope the district's telemedicine clinic will improve student attendance as well as help to prevent chronic conditions like diabetes, according to North Carolina Health News.

This year marks ECU's second year of a four-year U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration grant, which funds the project. The first year was spent setting up equipment and training ECU and Duplin County school staff.
