Mount Sinai creates BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute

New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System announced on Sept. 23 the establishment of a new institute to develop biomedical engineering and imaging technologies for the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases.

The BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute, expected to be fully operational by 2020, will enlist a team of prestigious principal investigators to create new innovations spanning fields such as imaging, nanomedicine, artificial intelligence, robotics, sensors, medical devices and computer vision technologies such virtual, augmented and extended reality.

These investigators will focus on three key research areas: AI in advanced imaging, next-generation medical technologies, and the use of virtual, augmented and extended reality to improve the patient, physician and researcher experience.

The institute will also build upon Mount Sinai's existing imaging and nanomedicine programs to develop biomedical engineering research and training programs for both graduate and medical school students.
