Health equity needs funding most: 6 things to know from NYC innovation report

The New York City Health Business Leaders released a report Feb. 1 on the healthcare startup landscape in the city and asked experts for their predictions for 2022.

Six things to know: 

  1. Innovation spending in New York skyrocketed in 2021, with 182 companies raising $9 billion, topping the previous year by 150 percent.
  2. Virtual care and coordination were the most popular areas for investing, bringing in 36 percent of funding throughout the year. Biotech and patient engagement came next, with 13 percent and 11 percent of total funding, respectively. 
  3. The state of digital health survey used a validated sample of approximately 100 health tech experts that use digital health tech. Their titles ranged from CEO to investor to clinician. When the survey asked them to name the biggest challenges of 2021, 50 percent said talent and hiring. 
  4. For 46 percent of respondents, health equity was seen as the most underfunded sector within digital health. Administrative efficiency and home-based care startups followed with 21 percent and 11 percent of respondents, respectively. 
  5. When asked which non-healthcare business would dominate health innovation in 2022, Amazon was the clear winner, with 44 percent of respondents choosing it. Walmart and Apple followed with 18 percent and 11 percent. 
  6. Thirty-two percent of respondents cited Mount-Sinai as the most innovative local health system. NewYork-Presbyterian and Northwell Health were next, both with 14 percent.
