City of Hope uses Microsoft AI to generate patient histories

Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope built an AI tool with Microsoft to generate patient histories, giving clinicians more time to see patients.

The large language model, developed with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, scans years of treatment reports, notes and test results to craft easily digestible summaries for providers to read before oncology patient visits. City of Hope physicians can now potentially see more patients and avoid repeating tests, scans and biopsies.

“We want to work with the best and brightest out there who can bring the right technologies to bear for us,” said Simon Nazarian, executive vice president and chief digital and technology officer at City of Hope, in an April 11 news release. “That’s where Microsoft came in. It’s a very mutually agreeable collaboration, where both sides are dedicated to advancing what is best for healthcare.”
