IBM, American Cancer Society to create Virtual Cancer Health Advisor

IBM and the American Cancer Society are joining forces to develop a virtual advisor for people fighting cancer. The companies announced the partnership at the 13th Annual World Health Care Congress in Washington, D.C., held April 10 through 13.

The virtual health advisor will be powered by Watson's cognitive computing using resources and guidance provided by the American Cancer Society to provide personalized guidance to individuals.

The dynamic health advisor will become more personalized as users continue to interact and engage with it, learning to anticipate individuals' needs. IBM and ACS also plan to integrate Watson's voice recognition and natural language processing technology into the virtual advisor's capabilities.

"We patients every day who seek information and insights to understand the disease and navigate their cancer journey," said Gary M. Reedy, CEO of the American Cancer Society. "This partnership can take these efforts to next level by combining the depth and breadth of cancer information from the world's most trusted cancer source with the power of cognitive technology from IBM Watson. It's about providing the right information to the right people at the right time."
