How a former NFL quarterback got into the world of health IT startups

A career of scoring touchdowns in front of a national audience may not be the typical background for most startup founders, but former NFL player Charlie Batch has taken his passion for sports to the world of health IT. The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is the co-founder of health IT startup Impellia, according to a GeekWire report.

Impellia, based in Pittsburgh, aims to leverage technology to prevent injuries and improve the rehabilitation process for athletes. The company uses PIVOT, a software platform developed at the University of Pittsburgh. Using a tablet, PIVOT helps perform tests for diagnosing ACL tears, according to the report.

The PIVOT platform utilizes markers placed around the knee, which then transmit movement data to Impellia’s mobile app, according to the report.

Mr. Batch founded the company along with healthcare entrepreneur Dave Morin and long-time friend Richard Walker.
