HIMSS Mobile Technology Survey: 10 statistics to know

Mobile technology is taking the healthcare industry by storm.

As more than 90 percent of American adults have cell phones, most of which have access to the Internet, healthcare IT developers are focusing more on mobile options for Internet access. The HIMSS Mobile Technology Survey, which included responses from 238 provider organization employees and was presented April 14 at the HIMSS15 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Chicago, took a snapshot of mobile technology implementation in the industry.

Here are 10 statistics to know from the report.

1. Ninety percent of respondents are using mobile technology to engage their patients.

2. Seventy-three percent are using app-enabled portals.

3. Thirty-one percent indicated their organization currently offers organization-specific apps.

4. Sixty-seven percent of respondents reported at least some of the information on mobile devices is uploaded to the EHRs.

5. Approximately thirty-three percent are using alerts sent out from the EHRs.

6. Fifty-one percent of respondents said budgets are the main barrier to effective use of mobile technologies.

7. Forty-seven percent of respondents indicated implementation of mobile services for access to information is a high priority at their organization.

8. Fifty-seven percent indicate their organization has a mobile technology policy.

9. More than half indicated the meaningful use program has a strong influence on their organization's mHealth strategy.

10. Sixty-two percent of respondents are using telehealth technology.
