Health IT Consultants Happier Than Hospital IT Staffers, Says Survey

More than three-fourths of health IT consultants are satisfied with their current position compared with 64 percent of full-time health IT employees, according to a new survey from staffing and consulting firm Healthcare IT Leaders.

The number one driver of consultant satisfaction and employee discontent seems to be pay. According to the survey, 40 percent of health IT consultants are "very satisfied" with their salary, compared with 18 percent of health IT employees. Additionally, both groups say compensation would be their main motivator for switching jobs.

Consultants also view their job as more meaningful than health IT employees. In the survey, 40 percent of consultants said their work was "extremely meaningful," compared with 29 percent of health IT employees.

The findings are important for healthcare organizations, as finding and retaining talented IT staffers is a persistent issue. According to a recent survey from HIMSS, about one-third of healthcare organizations reported putting at least one IT project on hold last year due to lack of staff.
