In order to meet meaningful use standards, healthcare providers will need to find ways of exchanging health information with other providers. In efforts to help providers achieve interoperability, the Office of the National Coordinator is launching demonstrations of its Direct Project for simple exchanges and is continuing to improve the nationwide health information network for more complex exchanges.
David Blumenthal, MD, national health IT coordinator, says interoperability and health information exchanges are as much of a challenge for the U.S. as they are for other parts of the world, such as Holland and Canada, both of which have a much higher adoption rate of electronic health records.
