Hackensack University Medical Center to adopt Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standards

Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center, led by CIO and vice president Shafiq Rab, MD, is restructuring the way its clinical data is structured and shared, according to a Healthcare Informatics report.

The medical center plans to use Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standards. FHIR is a next generation standards framework that can be used for mobile apps, cloud communications, EHR data sharing, server communication and more.

HackensackUMC has the Epic EHR and plans to make the 2015 version of the system FHIR-enabled, according to the report.

HackensackUMC is associated with Project Argonaut, a participant in the HL7 FHIR standards development initiative.

The ultimate goal behind the project is to achieve interoperability.
