Google, American Heart Association collaborate on joint venture: 5 things to know

Alphabet's Google Life Sciences unit and the American Heart Association are teaming up in a five-year, $50 million research effort, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Here are five things to know about the collaboration.

1. It was announced Sunday at the 2015 AHA Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Fla.

2. According to the report, it intended "to bring new approaches to research into the causes, treatment and prevention of heart disease."

3. Specifically, officials said the effort will try to identify new drivers of heart disease, along with strategies to address and potentially prevent the development of coronary artery disease or to reverse its development, according to the report.

4. Google and AHA will both contribute $25 million to the effort.

5. By early next year, a leadership group composed of members from both sides plans to select a person to head the effort, according to The Wall Street Journal.
