Mr. Berthaume was a communications analyst. In an attempt to earn bitcoins, he installed software that connected to an online bitcoin network on a Board of Governors computer server. He also changed several safeguards, enabling him to access the network at home.

He initially attempted to hide his actions by deleting the software, but he was eventually fired and pleaded guilty to charges in October.

No federal information was lost due to the incident.
