VA targets broader Oracle EHR deployment pending 2026 success

Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins said he hopes to expand the rollout of the Oracle EHR system to 20 to 25 additional VA medical facilities in fiscal year 2027, Nextgov/FCW reported May 15.

Here are four things to know:

  1. Mr. Collins said the planned deployment of the EHR system at 13 facilities in 2026 could pave the way for a broader rollout the following year if it proves successful.

  2. In December, the VA announced it would resume implementation of the Oracle EHR system — formerly developed by Cerner — at four Michigan facilities in mid-2026, following a pause prompted by patient safety concerns, technical issues and usability problems.

  3. The Trump administration’s fiscal year 2026 budget proposal, released May 2, includes a $2.2 billion funding increase to support the system’s continued deployment.

  4. The VA initially signed a $10 billion contract with Cerner in 2018. That figure has since grown to more than $16 billion. Oracle acquired Cerner in 2022.
