The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded the third option period of its contract with Oracle Health to support the agency’s EHR modernization efforts.

Here are five things to know:

  1. The extension continues a series of one-year contract terms aimed at enhancing fiscal and performance accountability. It builds on improvements achieved during previous contract periods.

  2. The VA renegotiated the original contract in 2023, shifting from a five-year agreement to five one-year options to allow for annual reviews and course corrections, according to a news release from the VA.

  3. Negotiations for the third option period focused on improving cost-efficiency and optimizing Oracle Health’s delivery of the federal EHR system.

  4. The agreement maintains an emphasis on shared accountability in key areas, including minimizing outages, addressing clinician feedback and improving interoperability with other health systems and applications.

  5. The latest contract extension comes as the VA prepares to accelerate deployment of the Oracle Health EHR at additional VA medical centers, beginning with four facilities in Michigan in mid-2026.
