Epic earned a B grade and an overall performance score of 82.3 out of 100 in the ambulatory health IT space, according to KLAS Research’s “Ambulatory Ecosystem Epic Complete Look 2025” report.

The report is based on feedback from interviews with 87 independent ambulatory organizations conducted between December 2023 and December 2024. It focuses solely on independent ambulatory organizations, excluding those owned by hospitals or health systems.

Here are five things to know about Epic’s performance, according to the report:

  1. Respondents praised Epic’s strong data integration, product innovation and hands-on support.

  2. The platform’s flexibility — particularly through offerings like Community Connect and Garden Plot — was also cited as a strength for independent practices looking to access Epic’s capabilities without owning the full infrastructure.

  3. However, some smaller organizations said the total cost of ownership, including add-on fees, was burdensome. Others noted that frequent software updates disrupted workflows and required specialized training to manage.

  4. KLAS also found that some practices relying on Community Connect — a model that allows smaller organizations to use Epic through a host health system — faced challenges with customization and rollout delays. Respondents from small clinics said they were at the mercy of host organizations when requesting necessary features or support.

  5. Despite these challenges, among independent groups with more than 75 physicians, Epic’s core EHR earned a score of 91.0, while its practice management solution for the same group scored 92.0.
