EHRs may save the global healthcare industry $78 billion by 2019, according to a report from Juniper Research.

The money-saving power of the EHR comes in its ability to support digital healthcare and mHealth projects, according to the report. In addition, the EHR’s role in population health management could have a significant impact on population wellness, which in turn could shape digital advances in healthcare and reduce provision of unnecessary care.

However, the savings could be contingent on well-conducted research in the interim. Because of the variety of healthcare environments, one-size-fits-all solutions will not provide comparable savings to individually tailored EHR systems, according to the report.

Finally, the report predicts less stringent regulations on digital healthcare companies and technologically advanced healthcare becoming mainstream will advance the synergy between health IT companies and healthcare, leading to greater digital health successes.
