The DOD awarded the grant to San Jose, Calif.-based FlexTech Alliance, a member-based organization that fosters the growth and profitability of the flexible and printed electronics supply chain. FlexTech Alliance will establish and lead the institute, which will be comprised of 96 companies, 11 laboratories, 42 universities and 14 state and regional organizations.

The DOD’s grant will be administered over five years, with more than $90 million in additional funding coming from industry, academia and local governments.

Flexible hybrid electronics manufacturing refers to producing electronics and sensors packaging through new techniques in electronic device handling and high precision printing. This type of manufacturing can be applied to healthcare as wearable devices and health monitoring technologies.

“FlexTech is privileged to accept this award from the Defense Department to stand up and lead the FHE MII,” said Michael Ciesinski, president and CEO of FlexTech Alliance. “Our partners collaborated on a superb proposal that links a national hub in San Jose to a network of centers of excellence throughout the U.S. We are excited by the FHE manufacturing challenge and eager to get operations underway.”
