The paramedic-level EMS organization was alerted that an unauthorized third party gained access to its billing information server in late February. An investigation with local police and federal law enforcement found a foreign party had hacked into the system.
Information that may have been exposed included Social Security numbers, dates of births and medical information. There is no evidence the information hacked had been misused, the EMS provider said.
Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Medical Services and the county are offering affected patients free identity theft protection services.
The EMS company said it is reviewing its security to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
