Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services is suing Change Healthcare over approximately $7 million in losses from a 2024 cyberattack.

The health system alleges it incurred the losses, largely in anesthesia, when the UnitedHealth Group subsidiary’s claims processing and payment functions were down during the ransomware attack, according to the lawsuit filed April 15.

“Fairview experienced significant operational and financial harm due to the February 2024 outage at Change Healthcare,” the health system told Becker’s in a statement. “While our teams worked tirelessly to protect patients from further impact and to maintain continuity of care, this event created confusion for patients and raised serious concerns about the potential compromise of patient data, which we view as a critical breach of trust.”

The health system is seeking restitution and more than $75,000 in damages. “We believe this lawsuit is baseless and we intend to defend ourselves vigorously,” UnitedHealth Group said in a statement to Becker’s.
