Cyberattacks lead to higher mortality rate in hospitals: study

A new study from the Ponemon Institute found that one-quarter of health IT professionals said cyberattacks lead to increased patient mortality rates, NBC News reported Sept. 8.

Additionally, 59 percent of healthcare IT professionals said cyberattacks increased the length of patient stays.

The Ponemon Institute is a think tank based in Washington, D.C. The study interviewed 600 health IT professionals across 100 healthcare facilities. More than half of these facilities had been targeted with a ransomware attack in the past three years, the report said.
