CIOs increasingly appointed to board seats

As technology becomes a steadfast pillar of corporations and organizations, more and more CIOs are being recruited for board seats, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

“There’s a huge number of organizations that feel left behind in technology change and business process change,” said Steve Chambers, former CIO of Visa Europe. “A lot of boards are saying we need people on the board who have been through that type of journey.”

However, getting to the board of another company is difficult, as CIOs have to dedicate significant time and energy with the new company, as well as sometimes learn the ins and outs of a new industry. What’s more, a CIO’s current company has to be in favor of the appointment, as their time is now split among multiple obligations, according to the report.
