CHIME Requests Extension of Meaningful Use Stage 2

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives formally recommended a one-year extension to stage 2 of meaningful use before progressing to stage 3 in a letter response to a report released by six Republican senators last month.

The report criticized the electronic health record incentive programs and the government's efforts to foster EHR adoption and promote interoperability.

In the letter, CHIME said that while it has voiced similar concerns regarding the EHR incentive programs, it believes the program has helped drive health IT adoption, and advance interoperability.

CHIME also noted the need for an extension of stage 2 to give providers the opportunity to optimize their EHR technology and achieve the benefits of stage 1 and stage 2, and to give vendors time to develop and deliver needed technology to correspond with stage 3. CHIME's proposal for an extension would result in stage 2 continuing in 2016 and stage 3 being pushed back to 2017.
